If dogs would play poker

If dogs would play poker

Such a fantasy appeared in the head of the American artist Cassius Coolidge once. Being a very original person in whose pictures the fauna is represented in a familiar surrounding Coolidge decided that dogs could quite play poker. In 1903 this artist painted the whole series of pictures that was called "Dogs Playing Poker". It is interesting to note that all 16 paintings with a common theme were made-to-order. An advertising agency «Brown & Bigelow» needed them to establish a calendar.

Cassius Coolidge tried to paint them as realistic as possible to make them interesting for viewers. He created a kind of parody of the life of the middle class people. All the heroes of his paintings were real poker players whose characters were reflected with amazing accuracy. Dogs in the image of respectable players with solemn manners have captured the hearts not only of dog admirers, but also of gambling fans forever. The emotions that characterize professional poker players are even reflected on dogs muzzles.

It is worth mentioning that such idea was to customers’ tastes. Over time those paintings have become a real poker symbol and appeared in many US homes. Virtuosos assess such paintings highly. They see a unique combination of taste, style, irony and reality in the pictures. Such work brought an unprecedented popularity to Cassius Coolidge.
