The territory of New Mexico as a bet!

There were the most different bets in the poker history. Sometimes they were absurd, sometimes ridiculous, and seldom really huge. One day in 1889 the territory of New Mexico appeared at the poker table as a bet. It was preceded by some very exciting events.

The governor of New Mexico State Bradford Prince decided to look at a poker game as it was really very fascinating. The popular players – Johnny Dougherty and Ike Jackson were at a game table in the city of Santa Fe. Besides, Jackson was one of the richest people of the Western coast of the USA. The game was very memorable and at the end of the tour the stake was more than 100 thousand dollars. The rich man Jackson drew the check with a pledge of his ranch with 10,000 heads of cattle to make a bet. Dougherty’s answer was quite worthy – he wrote the debenture having put in pledge the whole territory of New Mexico, and made the governor who was present there sign the document. Bradford Prince put the signature as there was a colt at his temple. That rate was the biggest in the poker history. Jackson was so discouraged by this action that stopped playing and dropped his cards.

Till the present day there is a low in New Mexico State that makes the candidates for the mayor's post who gained the equal number of votes play any game. In 1998 the two leaders of the election race- J. Farrington and J. Carlson got the same amount of votes. By flipping a coin, they chose to play poker. Farrington who beat his rival in poker became the mayor of the city.
