Split openers

- (slang) a strategic method in draw poker, when a player exchanges one or more cards required for the first bet, in order to make a stronger hand. For example, the player makes the first bet on a pair of jacks, and announces that he splits openers. He may want to form a straight or a flush. He puts these cards separate from the rest of the muck, in order to confirm his initial pair at the end of the deal.
